Seminário "Cuidar das Casas 2, A Conservação do Património do Século XX", 8 de Fevereiro, Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade do Porto
O

Workshop "Global Gifts: Material Cultures of European-Asian Diplomacy, 1500-1800", 25 de Janeiro de 2013, Birkbeck College, University of London, Reino Unido
A
one-day workshop at Birkbeck in collaboration with the Global History and Culture Centre (Warwick) and the Centre for Overseas History (Lisbon).
This workshop aims to enquire into the material and aesthetic culture of diplomatic negotiations between Europe and Asia before 1800. Participants will discuss the making and exchanging of diplomatic gifts, focusing on how objects furthered dialogues (or not), and to what extent they mobilized mutually intelligible ideas on economic and aesthetic value across cultural boundaries. We will explore why ivories from Sri Lanka were valued in Renaissance Europe, what the Jesuits found to be the most adequate gifts in China, how Muslims and Christians exchanged artefacts in a time of religious strife, and why paintings offered as gifts by the British were not particularly appreciated in eighteenth-century India. We invite everyone interested in Global Arts and culture, the circulation of objects, ideas and values in the Early Modern world, museums, collections and cross-cultural dialogues to join us in the library of John Maynard Keynes at Birkbeck’s School of Arts in Bloomsbury, London. Beyond the aim of gathering academics, curators and students interested in Global Arts and the future of Global Visual Studies, this event provides a forum for the discussion of projects and methodologies in a new field of historical research.
Free event.

Conferência "Architectural Electives Affinities; Correspondences, Transfers, Multi/Interdisciplinarity", 20 a 23 de Março de 2013,
Faculdade de Arquitetura e Urbanismo da Universidade de São Paulo, Brasil
We are very pleased to announce you all the opening of the Early Registration for the Conference. Till January, 5th you may take advantage of the discounts compared with the standard registration fees. Please, do so at
www.fau.usp.br/eahn2013/registration.html.
The main goal of this meeting is to bring together the Brazilian scholars and the world-wide members of the European Architectural History Network (EAHN) in an open dialogue, sharing subjects of common interest as well as methodological approaches. While the theme of the conference reflects this openness, it represents meanwhile a founding topic for the history of Brazil and of other Latin-American countries, also echoing similar situations in other places on the globe. Correspondeces, transfers, circulation and migration – of people and ideas – have been fundamental in human culture, architecture included, and are crucial in understanding the relations between Europe and Americas. It is important for the first conference of the EAHN outside Europe to embrace such topics which constitute practically an illustration of one of its major goals: fostering inclusive, transnational, interdisciplinary and multicultural approaches to the history of the building environment.

Henry van de Velde and the Total Work of Art, até 15 de Janeiro de 2013
C
all for papers for young scholars and Ph.D.-candidates. Henry van de Velde and the Total Work of Art 12th International Bauhauskolloquium, Weimar, 4-7 Apr 13.
Even though "the tendency towards the total work of art" (Szeeman) is still a constant presence in architectural as well as artistic concepts, the term itself plays only a minor role in current architectural discourse. The traumatic experiences with totalitarian regimes in the early twentieth century raised scepticism towards attempts at an all-encompassing design of our Lebenswelt (lived world). However, the total work of art cannot be identified exclusively with certain traditional form of political representation. Generally speaking, it manifests much less a specific aesthetic style than a twofold strategy of removing boundaries: since the 19th century, it has maintained the idea of a unity of art and life within society. Within the horizon of aesthetic modernism, it blurs the boundaries of traditional disciplines. The total work of art is thus regarded as spatial design as well as an intermedial configuration. Architecture is of central importance to this association. As an art form that is unwittingly confronted with the requirement to frame opposing codes into a creative unity (Eco), it is at the same time the prerequisite as well as the stage for the Gesamtkunstwerk. Architecture is, in the words of Henry van de Velde, "the heart of a true unity of the arts."
The conference will feature about twenty invited speakers and, as a platform to create a lively debate engaging emerging scholars and distinguished experts, a number of workshops with four to six peer reviewed paper presentations each. The topics of the workshop can be briefly described as follows: Totality / Fragment; Utopia / Critique; Medium / Aura; System / Theory.

Questioning the Material and Marginal Givens of Modernisms Scholarship, até 30 de Janeiro de 2013
‘É
tant donnés’: Questioning the material and marginal givens of modernisms scholarship (A Meta-Modernist Symposium), University College Cork, April 12 - 13, 2013.
This is an invitation to interrogate how we think and do modernisms scholarship. It is a call to examine assumptions about the materiality and marginality of modernisms and an appeal to evaluate how criticism responds to the format of formalism. The aim of ‘Étant donnés’ is to provoke a critical (re)evaluation of the lines we draw around and between modernist practices. Embracing a chronologically broad conceptualization of literary, plastic and performative ‘modernisms’, it seeks to generate self-reflexive scholarly investigations across disciplines.
We welcome proposals for papers from students and scholars of modernism(s) across the humanities, as well as from editors, archivists, translators, publishers and curators of modernist cultural artefacts. Proposals for challenges to the critical consensus on topics material or marginal will be especially well received, as will proposals to treat the potential impact of new technologies and reports of explorations from virgin and fallow territories within (or around) the field.

Cultural Encounters in the Luso-Hispanic World, até 31 de Janeiro de 2013
E
ncounters shape our experience of the world. They might be strategic or spontaneous, embraced or resisted, momentary or ongoing; they might involve individuals, communities, nations, or any number of formations; their effects might be transformative, destructive, creative, or simply go unnoticed; but it is through our relations with others, however defined, that we begin to articulate our place in the world. This two-day conference, organized by Hispanic Studies at the University of Warwick, will bring together an interdisciplinary mix of researchers to discuss the implications and resonances of the cultural encounters, exchanges and interactions that have shaped the Luso-Hispanic world and its relations with the rest of the globe across time. Our confirmed keynote speakers are Professor Julio Ortega, Brown University, and Professor Benita Sampedro, Hofstra University.
We welcome interventions that investigate specific instances of encounter; that offer theoretical reflection on encounter from a Luso-Hispanic perspective; or that synthesize broader histories and geographies of encounter in which the Luso-Hispanic world has played a role.
We invite proposals for individual and joint presentations on cultural encounters in the LusoHispanic world, with no chronological or geographical limitations. Papers should be of 20 minutes in duration, and we are open to a range of formats, including poster presentations and roundtables. Potential topics might include (but are not limited to): Cosmopolitanism; Migrations; Travel & tourism; Colonial encounters; Globalization; Borderlands; Translation; Transformations; (in)Tolerance; Representations; Networks; Friendships; Ghosts & spectres; Memories; Languages; Trade & exchange.

X Encontro Internacional dos Estudos Medievais: Diálogos Ibero-Americanos, até 28 de Fevereiro de 2013
A

Immaterial Materialities - Materiality and Interactivity in Art and Architecture, Interstices n.º 14, até 3 de Março de 2013
C
all for Journal Contributions for Interstices n.º 14. Materiality has recently claimed centre stage in architectural discourse and practice, yet its critical meaning is ever receding. Tropes like material honesty, digital materiality, material responsiveness and dematerialisation mark out an interdisciplinary field where scientific fact and artistic experimentation interact, and where what in fact constitutes materiality is constantly re-imagined. Interstices14 invites contributions that address the thematic strands: Immateriality; Atmosphere+Experience; Interactivity; Material Politics; Material Technology+Aesthetics; Material Referents.
